To teach in M-DCPS, you must fulfill State or District certification requirements. Once you know these requirements, learn how to obtain your initial teaching certificate.
State Issued Certificates
Full-time teaching positions require either a temporary or professional certificate. Select the category that best describes you to learn which certificate you qualify for.
■ Graduates from a Teaching Program
>Florida Graduates of Approved Programs
Graduates of Florida state-approved teacher preparation programs who have passed the subject area exam, the professional ed test, and all four parts of the general knowledge exam will qualify for a Professional Florida Educator's Certificate. Graduates of Florida approved teacher preparation programs who have not passed all tests will qualify for a Temporary Certificate.

You will apply for a Temporary Certificate, so that you may begin teaching full-time while you complete your remaining certification requirements. Your Statement of Status of Eligibility will provide you with specific and official information about your remaining requirements for the Professional Certificate.
■ Out-of-State Teacher or Administrator
Florida has two reciprocity routes for certified teachers and administrators to qualify for our Professional Certificate.
Route 1: Valid Standard Certificate Issued by a State Other than Florida
- The certificate must be a standard or Level II certificate issued by the other state or US territory, and
- the certificate must be currently valid (not expired or revoked).
- The subject/s shown on your certificate must be considered comparable to a subject/s issued in Florida.
Route 2: Certificate Issued by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
- The NBPTS certificate must be currently valid
- The Florida certificate will reflect the Florida subject considered comparable to the NBPTS subject.

■ Career Changer or College Graduate of a Non-education Program
A graduate with a degree from an accredited or approved institution who is considering the teaching profession as a first career or a career change must first be eligible for a temporary certificate
There are three ways to achieve eligibility:
You will apply for a Temporary Certificate, so that you may begin teaching full-time while you complete your remaining certification requirements. Your Statement of Status of Eligibility will provide you with specific and official information about your remaining requirements for the Professional Certificate.
■ Foreign Trained Graduate or Non-citizen
Applicants with academic training completed outside the United States should submit the following documentation with the completed application and fee(s):
- Official documentation of your educational training. DO NOT submit original foreign documents to the Bureau of Educator Certification. In lieu of the original, please submit a true copy of your original DIPLOMA, which has been verified by either a certification contact in a Florida school district office or by a notary public. If your documents are in a language other than English, please attach an English translation to each document. The translation may be provided by anyone with knowledge of both languages other than you.
- A Credential evaluation report that includes a statement of degree equivalency and a breakdown of your coursework into descriptive course titles and semester-hour credit. This may be provided by an accredited four-year college or university in the United States or by a credential evaluation agency approved by the Bureau of Educator Certification.

District Issued Certificates
Specific District certification is only needed for the positions below. For all other positions, State certification is sufficient. Click below to learn more.
■ Non-Degree Vocational Temporary (Full-Time)
The initial non-renewable temporary full-time non-degreed vocational certificate shall be valid for three school years and issued upon employment with Miami-Dade County Public Schools as a full-time vocational teacher.
- Six years experience in the field (vocational subject area). Five weeks of experience must be within the past five years.
- Copy of license or certificate (when applicable)
Or
- A minimum of two years of experience in the field with a bachelors or higher degree with the major being in a related instructional assignment.
The above requirements may vary depending on the vocational subject area of certification.
■ Non-Degree Vocational Part-Time
The initial renewable Part-time non-degreed vocational certificate shall be valid for five years and issued upon fingerprints’ clearance.
- Six years experience in the field (vocational subject area). Five weeks of experience must be within the past five years.
- Copy of license or certificate (when applicable)
Or
- A minimum of two years of experience in the field with a bachelors or higher degree with the major being in a related instructional assignment
■ Adult Part-Time
The initial renewable Part-time adult certificate shall be valid for five years and issued upon fingerprints’ clearance.
- Bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. accredited or approved institution or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution
- Thirty (30) semester hours in a specific certifiable subject area. For example, to be eligible as an adult Marketing instructor, the applicant must possess thirty (30) semester hours of Marketing coursework on the official transcripts with a bachelor’s or higher degree.
■ Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC)
The initial non-renewable temporary JROTC certificate shall be valid for three years and issued upon employment with Miami-Dade County Public Schools as a JROTC teacher.
- Verification of 20 years of experience
- Honorable Discharged
■ Career Specialist
Temporary or Professional Certificates are required for Career Specialists and are issued by Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS).
Requirements for the Temporary Certificate:
The Initial Temporary Certificate shall be valid for three school years, is non-renewable, and issued upon employment with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) as a Career Specialist. There are three plans by which eligibility for a Temporary Certificate can be established:
- Plan 1 - A bachelor's or higher degree earned from an accredited college/university and two years of qualified full-time experience* or the equivalent in part-time experience*.
- Plan 2 - An associate's degree earned from an accredited college/university or at least 60 semester hours of transferable college credit and four years of qualified full-time experience* or the equivalent in part-time experience*.
- Plan 3 - A certificate of technical/vocational training and four years of qualified full-time experience* or the equivalent in part-time experience*.
*Work experience must be in a technical, managerial or supervisory position outside of education.
College/University transcripts must indicate a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average (GPA)
■ Temporary Instructor (Substitute Teachers)
In order to obtain the Temporary Instructor certificate applicants must apply for Temporary Instructor employment through the Instructional Staffing Office. A valid Florida Temporary or Professional Certificate could substitute the District Temporary Instructor Certificate.
