Initial:
Career Specialist Certificates (Temporary or Professional) are issued by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Applicants for Career Specialist positions must complete the District Vocational Certificate Application form (FM-5585) for a teaching certificate. The applicant's credentials are verified in order to establish eligibility for a certificate. If eligible for the certificate, a Statement of Eligibility is issued to the applicant by the district. A Full-Time Vocational Career Specialist Certificate (Temporary or Professional) is issued when the applicant is hired.
Requirements for the Temporary Certificate:
The Initial Temporary Certificate shall be valid for three school years, is non-renewable, and issued upon employment with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) as a Career Specialist. There are three plans by which eligibility for a Temporary Certificate can be established:
- Plan 1 - A bachelor's or higher degree earned from an accredited college/university and two years of qualified full-time experience or the equivalent in part-time experience.
- Plan 2 - An associate's degree earned from an accredited college/university or at least 60 semester hours of transferable college credit and four years of qualified full-time experience or the equivalent in part-time experience.
- Plan 3 - A certificate of technical/vocational training and four years of qualified full-time experience or the equivalent in part-time experience.
Work experience must be in a technical, managerial or supervisory position outside of education.
College/University transcripts must indicate a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average (GPA)
Requirements for the Professional Certificate:
The Professional Certificate shall be valid for five school years and issued based upon the following requirements:
- A passing score on the General Knowledge Examination. This must be passed within one year from the date of employment.
- A passing score on the professional education subtest of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE).
- Demonstration of professional education competence.
- Two full years of successful full-time experience as a career specialist.
- Completion of the M-DCPS approved inservice training program for career specialists.
- Application for a District Professional Certificate and a $75 fee.
Renewal:
To renew a Full-Time Vocational Career Specialist Professional Certificate, the applicant must:
Upon receipt, the Certificate Office will authorize issuance of the Full-Time Vocational Career Specialist Professional Certificate with a validity period of five years.
NOTE: A Full-Time Vocational Career Specialist Professional Certificate can not be renewed if requirements for renewal were not completed prior to the expiration of the certificate or if the certificate has been expired for more than one fiscal year.
